Colon polyps are best detected before they become cancerous. The most accurate procedure is colonoscopy. During this procedure, a thin flexible instrument is inserted through the rectum which allows the doctor to see the lining of the entire colon. The colonoscope is connected to a video camera and display monitor so the doctor can closely examine the inside of the colon. The procedure is performed under "twilight sleep" sedation making it quite comfortable. Colonoscopy is usually performed in a hospital outpatient department or ambulatory endoscopy center and usually takes about 20 - 30 minutes. Patients are fully recovered and back to work the next morning.
