In the past, surgeons used silk sutures to sew organs back together again. Now most surgery of the digestive tract is done with surgical staples. These can be applied more quickly than sewing by hand and are made of materials that are non-allergic and non-irritating. They remain in place forever. The patient can't feel the staple.
