Dr. Jan Maratta is a lifelong resident of this area where he has practiced general surgery for over 20 years. He has been proud to follow the footsteps of his father, Dr. John Maratta, Sr., who was also a general surgeon. Dr. Maratta would like to express what is most important to him, and that is quality of care and caring quality to his patients, fairness to all of his peers, and respect to all that is valued in family and community life.
He has remained in private practice all of these years because he values his close relationships to each patient and realizes this importance in a patient's ability to heal. He is also most proud of his loyal staff who are more than willing to go that extra mile to aid each patient.
Dr. Maratta received his medical degree from The University of Bologna, Italy, where he graduated cum laude. He did a general internship at St.Francis Hospital in Pittsburgh, and a surgical residency at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. Since then, he has been on staff at Sewickley Valley Hospital, Ohio Valley Hospital, and Suburban General Hospital, and UPMC, Beaver Hospital. He is known to many as a pioneer of laparoscopic and laser surgery within this geographic area.
He has been married for 34 years to his wife, Carolyn. They have five daughters, three of whom are nurses who also work, or have worked, at Sewickley Valley Hospital. Two of his daughters are teachers. He has six grandchildren, soon to be seven. As to what Dr. Maratta enjoys most in life - they all have just been mentioned above - his work, his patients, and his family.
