Our New Waiting Room Aviary

Patients speak. We listen... For the past 8 years, we have asked our patients to fill out a Patient Satisfaction Survey. This "report card" helps us identify ways in which we can improve our service to our patients. We have had a large TV in our waiting room for years and not one comment. Interestingly, in the past 4 months, we have received numerous complaints about the TV. I think the news lately has just been making our already-anxious patients a bit more anxious. We decided to remove the TV from our main waiting room and replace it with something more peaceful. We found a company in South Dakota, Living Design, Inc., which makes custom aviaries for medical facilities. Our aviary was installed in July with 14 colorful and interesting birds - a singing carnary, two doves, and eleven finches from all around the world. Our finches had their first baby birds just last week. They have been a source of many positive comments from our patients. They find the the new environment much more relaxing and even more interesting.

The Audibon Society is one of the biggest supporters of Living Design, Inc. which is one of the largest breeders of finches in the United States. Living Design focuses on the future of birds. These birds were never in the wild. They were specifically bred for aviary life and would not survive outside of the aviary. None of our birds are from North America. These birds are approved by Avian Vetinarians and the Centers for Disease Control. They are safe and pose no unusual health risks to our patients. The Living Design aviary is maintained within the guidelines of the Pennsylvania Health Department. In fact, everything about our aviary surpasses the Health Department's requirements.
