There are two "pipes' in the back of your throat. The esophagus (foodpipe) carries food down into your stomach. The trachea (windpipe) carries fresh air into your lungs. A valve separates the two so air goes into the lungs and food does not. Speech is produced by the vocal chords, two folds of tissue which lie at the opening of the trachea This video is an example of what the doctor sees when examining your throat. Note the two healthy vocal chords moving above the open trachea.
