Adding Years Of Life - In Less Than 30 Seconds

This short video is another example of how simple it can be to prevent colon cancer by means of screening colonoscopy. Here we see a typical benign colon polyp - a future colon cancer - that was found in a healthy 53 year old woman who came in for a routine checkup. She had no symptoms or risk factors.
Note the head of the polyp and the short flexible stalk that connects it to the colon wall. A thin wire snare was passed through the colonoscope. Under direct vision, the wire snare was placed over the head of the polyp and snugged around the stalk. A computer-controlled electocautery current was applied which severed and cauterized the stalk. There was no pain or bleeding. The polyp was retrieved for a biopsy. Another colon cancer prevented in mere seconds - adding years to a lifetime.
