This short video clip is a view of the anal ring seen from inside the rectum during a colonoscopy exam. In this instance, the colonoscope was inserted just a few inches into the rectum and then turned back on itself. This so-called "retroflexed view" allows the doctor to determine if rectal bleeding is due to rectal cancer or hemorrhoids. In this case, we see a ring of swollen purple hemorrhoidal veins encircling the inner anal opening. This would be a perfect case for Infrared Coagulation (IRC), a non-surgical method which shrinks internal hemorrhoids, avoiding the need for invasive painful surgery.
